Bridging Tradition and Modernity in Carnatic Music

Akshay Ram was born to Smt. R. Buvaneswari and Shri N. Ramanathan of Chennai in the year 1994.

Akshay’s parents are ardent lovers of Carnatic music and hence he was initiated to learning Mrudangam at the tender age of 3.

It was also the guidance and blessings of Her Holiness Pujyashree Mathioli R Saraswathy (Founder President of Nandalala Seva Samithi Trust) that Akshay was introduced to Mrudangam.

Education and Work Experience

Akshay Ram is a distinguished alumnus of PS Senior Secondary School and Bharathi Vidyalaya Sr. Sec. School. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce from Kumararani Meena Muthiah College, affiliated with Madras University, where he achieved the status of a university rank holder.

In 2018, Akshay completed his Cost and Management Accounting (CMA) qualification, earlier known as ICWA. Following this, he joined a major IT MNC as a Finance Executive, where he advanced to the role of Manager by October 2024.

From his schooling years through to his corporate employment, Akshay was consistently encouraged to pursue the art of Mrudangam. This support nurtured his passion for music alongside his academic and professional achievements, allowing him to develop a deep appreciation for the instrument throughout his journey.

During his tenure in the corporate world, Akshay consistently strived for excellence in his role, earning notable appreciation from the management for his dedication and performance.

While enjoying a successful tenure in the corporate world, Akshay made the decision to pursue his passion for music full-time. This choice not only reflects his dedication to Mrudangam but also signifies his commitment to fully immerse himself in the art form he has cherished throughout his life. Embracing this new path allows him to explore his creativity and share his love for music with others.

Gurus

Initial & Advanced Training

Akshay initially started to learn Mrudangam under Shri. Ghatam V Suresh in the year 1997.

He strengthened his foundational skills and underwent intense training for seven years,

In the year 2004 on the 2nd day of June , Akshay, at the tender age of ten, had his Arangetram( Maiden Concert) at PS Dakshinamurthy Auditorium- Mylapore, Chennai.

During these seven-years, , he had attended over 200 live concerts of his Guru, Shri Ghatam V. Suresh, performing for Carnatic music legends, thus experiencing such enriching peformances from the dais.

This helped Akshay gain holistic insights of stage performances.

In December 2004, Akshay began advanced training in mridangam under the legendary Dr. Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, a recipient of the “Sangitha Kalanidhi” and “Padma Vibhushan” awardee. Over the past 20 years, he has gained invaluable experience and knowledge from his guru Shri UKS, and is proud to pursue the legacy of Shri UKS Bani.

Concert Performances

Since 2004, Akshay has accompanied over 2500 concerts

He has performed in various prestigious organisations and Sabhas and to name a few

Fusion Concerts

Apart from Carnatic music, Akshay has been performing in fusion concerts and also has been freelancing for various fusion bands.

Akshay takes the stage as a percussionist where he plays mridangam , Cajon, Shakers and does Konakol as well.
